As the years go by the question always comes up who’s the greatest 49ers team of all time. There’s a couple teams that always stand out, mainly are Super Bowl winning teams. But also the teams that didn’t make it to the end. And most of these break my heart every time but we’re going to talk about it today. We’re going to answer the question who is the 49ers greatest team of all time
Honorable mention to the 2019 San Francisco 49ers. This one hurts. I think every fan can agree that in recent years there is no one that hits harder than this one. We really had every piece that we needed and we still couldn’t get it done. The overthrow of Emmanuel Sanders from Jimmy G is just a painful reminder that this year should have been ours. but anyways let’s talk about the team. our team consisted of Jimmy Garoppolo when he was actually good after this season he just lost all of his confidence and it sucks. rookie Deebo Samuel popped out this year same with rookie Nick Bosa. George Kittle was Far and Away the best receiving threat this year and he was the best blocking tight end in the entire league. Richard Sherman are arch rival for so long the man that detrimented us for so long became our favorite defensive player on that 2019 team. We love him so much that he’s an uncle in the 49ers fan community. And Fred Warner emerged as one of the best defensive players in the league. every single player on this team had a role and we were so complete. and all my years being a 49ers fan I have never seen a team this complete not get it done. this fell like a Brady LED team obviously Jimmy was not Brady. in fact Jimmy G is terrible we know now he was hard carried by our entire defense. But this year before he lost all his confidence and played the whole game with Happy Feet. This 2019 Jimmy had a chip on his shoulder and he brought that for the whole team. Kyle was really crafty with all his play calls and didn’t shy away from anything. I feel like Kyle Shanahan now is so in his head that we can’t do it. you believe what you think you are and that’s what happened after this season. It was ours for the taking and we lost. Still one of the best 49ers teams of all time.
1994 Niners what a dominant postseason. This was one of the harder seasons going into it. We all were still questioning why we let Joe Montana go. Jerry Rice wasn’t getting any younger, all of our ’80s talent was retiring and there were just a lot of questions that we had going into it. When we picked up Deion Sanders there was a Feeling in the air that I was going to be a special season. The real reason though was Steve Young. Steve Young had his best year ever. It wasn’t just his best season ever, it was the best season a quarterback has ever had in the history of the NFL. Steve Young in 1994 won Super Bowl, MVP, Super Bowl MVP, Pro bowl, All pro first team, lead the league in passer rating, lead the league in completion percentage and did all of this in the 90’s. His 112.8 passer rating that year is still the highest in NFL history. This hasn’t cemented him as the greatest Lefty in NFL history and a top five quarterback, probably 10. Dare I say that Jerry and Steve Young’s connection was better than with Montana. respectfully I would say so nothing against Montana this is just how good this connection was especially the 94 season. This offense and the team was just so good. six touchdowns in a Super Bowl just Explains It All.
1989 was just the final blow to show our dominance of the ’80s. The West Coast offense was just two unbeatable. let’s start with the obvious shall we Joe Montana was absolutely ridiculous this year this is probably the best stats he’s ever had. Won the NFL MVP this year. Jerry Rice had been in the offense for a while now and was far and away the best wide receiver for a long time. Rodger Craig was still that dual threat back that didn’t really exist at the time. No one knew how to figure out this offense. The worst part for other teams was that our defense was arguably better. This is one of the most well-rounded teams ever assembled. We could have gone undefeated with this team. Maybe we were a little lackadaisical throughout the regular season. but when playoff time came up it was wraps. Everything about the playoffs would just be Unstoppable. 55 to 10 in a Super Bowl you just got to be at a loss of words if you’re the Denver Broncos in 1989. One of the best teams in 49ers history and definitely on the list.
1984 Undoubtedly the best 49ers team that we’ve ever had. Joe Montana was Unreal this season no one had seen anybody win like this. He was so composed, so calm and just won. This made him unlike any other player at the quarterback position we had seen up to that point. Jerry Rice stepped on the stage emerging as the greatest wide receiver of all time and had the best wide receiver season ever. 22 Jerry Rice had 22 touchdowns in a single 16 Game season in a run heavy League. To put this in perspective it took Tom Brady’s Juggernaut of a team and adding Randy Moss to break the single season receiving record. Jerry wasn’t getting fed every second he was just always open that cannot be said the same for Moss. Both amazing but they are not the same one is far superior and way more impressive. Roger Craig had the thousand a thousand seasons which had never been done. It feel like your entire offense got first team All Pro. the defense was outstanding it was so good Ronnie lot, Charles Haley and Fred Dean absolutely nasty them boys were. Also this is the most impressive season ever in NFL history. I’ll stand on it. did we go undefeated no but our only loss came to a very good Pittsburgh Steelers team by two points. if you want to take the 16-0 Patriots that’s fine but they lost against a bad Giants team in the Super Bowl. Everything about the season was absolute dominance; there were some stats that were broken that no one thought was possible at the time. this is the greatest team I’ve ever seen.
